Background & Objectives

Respiratory and its associated infections are a significant cause of mortality worldwide. Many respiratory pathogens (Bacterial, Fungal and Viral) reported in literature have significantly worsened global health. Tuberculosis and recently emerged COVID-19 are the two pandemics caused by the respiratory pathogens have significantly increased the pressure over the world and researchers stand facing the ways to control these diseases.
Various comorbidities have been reported as major risk factors that increased the pathogenesis of these respiratory infections. Significant progress in development of theranostics related to the respiratory infections and other comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), cerebrovascular disease, coronary heart disease, hypertension, tuberculosis, smoking, and diabetes has also been reported by the researchers. Since over centuries, the use of bioactive compounds against various diseases with special reference to respiratory infections have been visible in the literature. These natural bioactive compounds are the components of many of the current traditional medicines. A lot of research on bioactive compounds has been accumulated with reference to tuberculosis and COVID-19, which may be used for the development of novel drugs/molecules against these diseases. Apart from the respiratory illness, bioactive compounds have been also screened against various diseases such as Glaucoma, Arthritis, and Cancer etc. Therefore, the discovery and uses of these natural bioactive compounds could be exploited as newer opportunities to control these diseases in this era of antibiotic resistance and emergence of new strains of pathogens.
